What is the Balanced Scorecard?
The Balanced Scorecard (BSC), developed by Drs. Robert Kaplan and David Norton, is a strategic planning and management system used to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals.
It moves beyond traditional financial metrics to provide a more 'balanced' view by considering performance from four key perspectives. The BSC helps organizations translate their vision and strategy into a coherent set of objectives and measures.
The Four Perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard
The BSC framework suggests that we view the organization from four perspectives, and to develop objectives, measures (KPIs), targets, and initiatives (actions) relative to each of these points of view:
1. Financial Perspective
Focuses on financial performance and shareholder value. Objectives typically relate to profitability, revenue growth, cost reduction, and asset utilization.
Example Question: "How do we look to our shareholders?"
2. Customer Perspective
Focuses on creating value for customers and achieving customer satisfaction, retention, and market share goals.
Example Question: "How do customers see us?"
3. Internal Business Processes Perspective
Focuses on the internal processes that an organization must excel at to meet customer expectations and achieve financial objectives. This includes operational excellence, innovation, and regulatory compliance.
Example Question: "What must we excel at?"
4. Learning and Growth Perspective
Focuses on the intangible assets of an organization – its people, systems, and organizational culture – to drive innovation and improvement. This includes human capital (skills, training), information capital (systems, databases), and organizational capital (culture, leadership).
Example Question: "How can we continue to improve and create value?"
These four perspectives are interconnected. Success in Learning & Growth drives improvements in Internal Processes, which in turn enhances Customer Value, ultimately leading to better Financial results.
