What is the Business Model Canvas?
The Business Model Canvas (BMC), developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur, is a globally recognized tool that helps entrepreneurs, managers, and consultants to design, challenge, and pivot business models. It provides a shared language to think about how a company creates, delivers, and captures value.
The canvas is structured around nine fundamental building blocks that cover the four main areas of a business: customers, offer, infrastructure, and financial viability.
The Nine Building Blocks
1. Customer Segments
Defines the different groups of people or organizations an enterprise aims to reach and serve. Who are your most important customers?
2. Value Propositions
Describes the bundle of products and services that create value for a specific Customer Segment. What problem are you solving or need are you satisfying?
3. Channels
Describes how a company communicates with and reaches its Customer Segments to deliver a Value Proposition. How do you reach your customers?
4. Customer Relationships
Describes the types of relationships a company establishes with specific Customer Segments. What kind of relationship does each customer segment expect?
5. Revenue Streams
Represents the cash a company generates from each Customer Segment. How do you earn revenue? For what value are customers willing to pay?
6. Key Resources
Describes the most important assets required to make a business model work. What critical assets do you need?
7. Key Activities
Describes the most important things a company must do to make its business model work. What critical activities do you need to perform?
8. Key Partnerships
Describes the network of suppliers and partners that make the business model work. Who are your key partners and suppliers?
9. Cost Structure
Describes all important costs incurred to operate a business model. What are the most important costs inherent in your business model?
