ElevenLabs kept shrinking. AlphaSense stopped.
1,462 open roles, flat like-for-like. One of last issue's two shrinking boards kept falling and the other stopped, roles in the city rose for a third issue running, and a fourth cohort lands where the first three did.

Issue three went out on a Wednesday, so this one covers four days instead of seven. We are back on Mondays from here, and a short window is still worth reading: it answers the two questions issue three left open.
1,462 open roles
Across 46 New York AI companies. 773 of those sit in the city itself and 272 are remote-eligible.
Comparing the same 46 companies with issue three, open roles went from 1,467 to 1,462. Down 5, or 0.3%. The 47th company had a single opening and now lists none, so it drops out of the count. That accounts for the one-role gap between the raw and like-for-like figures.
15 companies grew, 12 shrank and 19 did not move.
The finding: one big board is still shrinking, the other has stopped
Issue three traced almost all of a 99-role fall to two companies with large, mostly remote boards. The question was whether they would keep going.
ElevenLabs did. It went from 139 open roles to 125, after dipping to 122 on October 9. That is 235 on September 20 to 125 now: nearly half its board in three weeks. 35 of its postings came down in these four days. Its New York roles held at seven throughout, so none of this touched the city.
AlphaSense did not. It went from 194 to 196. Eleven postings came down and 13 went up, which is what ordinary turnover looks like. One flat stretch does not make a trend, but the steady decline of the previous fortnight has paused.
Take both out and the other 44 companies went from 1,134 roles to 1,141, with six of the seven new roles in the city.
New York keeps rising
Split the same 46 companies by where the job is:
| Sep 20 | Oct 7 | Oct 11 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roles in New York | 759 | 768 | 773 |
| Roles elsewhere | 807 | 699 | 689 |
Three readings in a row, the city went up while the total went down. Over three weeks the same companies dropped 104 roles overall and added 14 in New York.
Who is hiring hardest
| Company | Open roles | In New York | Change since Oct 7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AlphaSense | 196 | 31 | +2 |
| Ramp | 165 | 129 | +5 |
| EliseAI | 127 | 107 | +3 |
| ElevenLabs | 125 | 7 | −14 |
| Rogo | 88 | 55 | +2 |
| Headway | 87 | 29 | +2 |
| Clay | 55 | 39 | −2 |
Ramp and EliseAI grew again, and again the growth was local: every one of Ramp's five new roles and all three of EliseAI's are in New York. That is three issues in a row for both. EliseAI's growth comes with fresh money: it announced a $350 million raise at a $4 billion valuation on September 29, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer Venture Partners. That round and the rest of the past three weeks' New York AI deals are in the NYC AI moves tracker. Runway added three, to 48.

Entry level hit a new high
| Level | Now | Issue three |
|---|---|---|
| Mid | 726 | 734 |
| Senior | 309 | 311 |
| Staff and principal | 172 | 174 |
| Manager | 92 | 91 |
| Entry | 64 | 60 |
| Director | 62 | 58 |
| Leadership | 37 | 40 |
64 entry-level roles is the most we have recorded, one above the October 2 peak. Directors, at 62, are also at a high. Staff and principal roles still outnumber entry-level ones 2.7 to one, so the routes in remain mostly lateral; they are in how to get into AI.
Go-to-market leads engineering by 498 roles to 446, a gap of 52, up from 43. Forward deployed engineer slipped from 42 open roles to 40.
What it pays
From salary ranges posted on New York listings. 92% of NYC postings carry one, the same as last issue.
| Function | 25th | Median | 75th |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | $185,000 | $215,000 | $255,000 |
| Product | $170,000 | $197,500 | $240,000 |
| Finance & Legal | $145,000 | $182,000 | $210,000 |
| Go-to-market | $135,000 | $163,750 | $212,500 |
| Operations | $130,000 | $160,000 | $180,000 |
Engineering holds at $215,000 for a third issue, on 155 posted ranges. Nothing else moved by enough to mean anything over four days. The NYC AI engineer salary guide has the bands by level.
A caution on the tool counts
Last issue reported Anthropic named by 24 companies and OpenAI by 17. Four days later it is 19 and 14.
That is not five companies deciding to stop using Anthropic. Each count records whether any open posting at a company names the tool. When the postings that named it come down, the company leaves the count. All five companies that dropped out of the Anthropic count had boards that shrank this week, ElevenLabs among them, or left our coverage.
So treat a move of a few companies in a few days as turnover, not a shift in what anyone is building with. Every term, with who is asking for it, is in the AI skills glossary.
The top of the org chart
26 C-level, VP and head-of searches are open. None opened in these four days and two came down, both at ElevenLabs.
One of them was the Head of Revenue Operations search that issue three pointed to as a sign ElevenLabs was still hiring at the top during its drawdown. It came down on October 9 after eight days. The other was an Enterprise Deployment Chief of Staff role, open for 50 days.
A search coming down still does not tell you who, if anyone, was hired. Confirmed leadership moves go in the NYC AI moves tracker once they are announced.
Time to fill: a fourth cohort
The roles first posted in the week of September 6 have now had their 28 days.
| Roles first seen | Roles | Down within 14 days | Down within 28 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 16–22 | 115 | 13% | 25% |
| Aug 23–29 | 126 | 15% | 23% |
| Aug 30–Sep 5 | 108 | 13% | 31% |
| Sep 6–12 | 89 | 10% | 29% |
The fourth cohort lands inside the range of the first three. Between a quarter and a third of AI roles posted in New York come down within four weeks, and roughly seven in ten are still up a month after posting. Like the third cohort, this one's 28 days overlap the ElevenLabs drawdown, which may be pushing both toward the top of the range.
"Came down" means the posting disappeared: filled, cancelled or reposted under a new link, and we cannot tell those apart.
Next issue: Monday, October 19. A full week of data, whether AlphaSense's pause holds, and a fifth cohort.
A note on method
Week-over-week changes are computed on the companies present in both weeks, never on the headline total. Adding a company to our coverage adds its whole board to the count and would show up as a hiring surge that never happened. We would rather report a flat 0.4% than an exciting 2.9% that is really a bookkeeping change.
