Issue #6November 4, 2026

New York roles fell for the first time. EliseAI is why.

1,532 open roles, down 1.3% like-for-like. Roles in the city fell for the first time, EliseAI lost 16 of them, and the latest cohort came down faster than any before it.

This issue is late. It was due on October 26, so it covers fifteen days, October 20 to November 4. Issue five asked whether the rebound would hold and whether the city would catch up. Neither happened.

1,532 open roles

Across 47 New York AI companies. 785 of those sit in the city itself and 311 are remote-eligible.

All 47 were tracked at both dates, so there is no gap between the raw and like-for-like figures: open roles went from 1,552 to 1,532. Down 20, or 1.3%. The total peaked at 1,564 on October 22 and has drifted down since.

17 companies grew, 18 shrank and 12 did not move. Three companies explain the fall. EliseAI, ElevenLabs and AlphaSense lost 39 roles between them, and the other 44 companies added 19.

The finding: the city's run ended at EliseAI

Roles in the city had risen at every issue so far: 734, 759, 768, 773, 788. This time they fell.

A fall of three looks like nothing, and that understates it, for two reasons.

EliseAI went from 131 open roles to 114, and its New York roles from 111 to 95. That is 16 of the city's roles at one company. October 20 was its highest count on record, and the number has not risen on a single day since. 19 postings came down and two went up. The ones that came down had been open a median of 51 days, so these were not fresh listings being swapped out. For four issues running, all of its growth was local. As always, a posting coming down does not tell you whether the role was filled or dropped.

The other companies' gain is smaller than it looks. Without EliseAI, the city went from 677 roles to 690, up 13. But one company's New York count rose by 12 while it has only five new postings still open. So at least seven of those were existing postings that changed location, not new jobs. Take those out, and the other 46 companies added at most six roles in the city.

ElevenLabs and AlphaSense turned over

ElevenLabs went from 157 to 144, after reaching 160 on October 21. The net change hides how much moved: 81 postings came down and 68 went up, on a board of about 150. The ones that came down had been open a median of 15 days, and 16 of the new postings went up and came down inside the fifteen days. That one company is a quarter of the 328 postings that came down across the index. Its New York roles went from 11 to 12.

AlphaSense went from 211 to 202. 58 postings came down, a median of 21 days after going up, and 49 went up. Its New York roles finished where they started, at 35.

Issue five called ElevenLabs's rebound steady. It has now given back more than a third of it.

Rogo passed 100 open roles for the first time. It is at its highest count, and two of its six new roles are in New York. Headway added four, three of them in the city. Clay added three overall but lost two in New York. Ramp remains the largest employer in the city by a distance.

Leadership up, the bottom of the ladder down

Last issue's record for directors lasted two days, reaching 72 on October 22 before falling back to 64. Leadership roles went from 37 to 43, the most since September 27. Entry level fell again, to 53, so staff and principal roles now outnumber entry-level ones three to one. The routes in are in how to get into AI.

Engineering fell from 448 to 437, after touching 429 on November 3, the lowest we have recorded. Go-to-market fell less, from 534 to 525, so the gap widened from 86 to 88. The one function that grew by more than a few roles was finance and legal, up 12 to 89, its highest on record. Forward deployed engineer roles went from 41 to 44, still below the 47 they reached on October 4.

What it pays

From salary ranges posted on New York listings. 90% of NYC postings carry one, down from 91%.

Function25thMedian75th
Engineering$187,500$216,000$255,000
Product$175,000$200,000$227,500
Finance & Legal$135,000$185,000$210,000
Go-to-market$142,500$175,000$215,500
Operations$130,000$155,000$180,000

Engineering moved after four issues at $215,000, by a thousand dollars, to $216,000 on 155 posted ranges. Senior engineers' median stays at $207,500, and staff and principal went from $245,000 to $250,000. The NYC AI engineer salary guide has the bands by level.

Go-to-market's median went from $165,000 to $175,000 on 160 ranges. That is a large move in two weeks, and it more likely reflects which sales roles are open now than any company paying more.

The tool counts: fewer framework names

LangChain went from 7 companies to 4 and LangGraph from 4 to 2. On September 20 they were at 9 and 6. Hugging Face went from 5 to 2. Going the other way, dbt went from 18 to 21 and Airflow from 7 to 10. Anthropic is at 22 companies and OpenAI at 14.

These are small counts, and a few postings closing can move them. It is one to watch, not a conclusion about what anyone builds with. Every term, with who is asking for it, is in the AI skills glossary.

The top of the org chart

34 C-level, VP and head-of searches are open, up from 28. Seven opened, three came down and two older postings joined the count.

AlphaSense opened a VP, Communications search, and Headway opened a Head of Strategy & Operations in the Office of the COO. ElevenLabs posted a Head of Real Estate that came down two days later, and its Chief of Staff to Head of Talent search came down after 13 days. ASAPP's VP, Strategic Accounts search came down after 55.

A search coming down still does not tell you who, if anyone, was hired. Confirmed leadership moves go in the NYC AI moves tracker once they are announced.

Issue five said five cohorts gave the same answer, and the sixth agrees. The seventh does not. 45 of its 121 roles came down within four weeks, the most of any cohort, and nearly a quarter were gone within two.

It is not one company. AlphaSense took down 13 of its 27 and Headway 8 of its 16, but without those two the rest still came in at 31%, the top of the earlier range. One cohort is not a trend, so the next one matters.

"Came down" means the posting disappeared: filled, cancelled or reposted under a new link, and we cannot tell those apart.

Next issue: Monday, November 9. Whether the city recovers, whether EliseAI starts posting again, and whether the eighth cohort looks like the seventh.

A note on method

Week-over-week changes are computed on the companies present in both weeks, never on the headline total. Adding a company to our coverage adds its whole board to the count and would show up as a hiring surge that never happened. We would rather report a flat 0.4% than an exciting 2.9% that is really a bookkeeping change.
